Flats4Volunteers
The number of students in Germany has been rising steadily since 2022 and has stood at 2.88 million since the 2025–26 winter semester (Federal Statistical Office)). Berlin, for example, according to the Berlin-Brandenburg Statistical Office show a 2.8% increase in the number of students compared to the 2024/25 winter semester. Consequently, “as of December 2025—according to a preliminary report from the office— 206,458 students at a university [or university of applied sciences] in Berlin registered. This, of course, has an impact on the already strained housing market.

Berlin: College Town but too few Dormitories
Berlin has numerous public and private universities. In addition, there are a large number of branches of private and public universities from other federal states or even other countries Senatsverwaltung für Wissenschaft, Gesundheit und Pflege). If a university has a legal contract or agreement with studierendenWERK BERLIN, students have access to 9,200 places in various halls of residencespread across the city. This currently applies to only 21 of the 40 universities and universities of applied sciences.
Mental stress caused by long wait times
studierendenWERK BERLIN undoubtedly offers affordable apartments for single occupants and groups, BUT the current waiting period for such apartments in Berlin is two or three semesters (or, in other words, between 12 and 18 months)). This can be particularly stressful for first-year students and can also have a negative impact on their daily academic life.

SBW Berlin’s “Flat4Volunteers”
In response to the growing number of students in Berlin and the resulting increase in students seeking housing, the “Flats4Volunteers” project was launched in late fall 2025 as a supplement to the existing SBW Berlin scholarship program. In exchange for social engagement, SBW Berlin offers free housing in one of its two-person shared apartments (WGs) in Buckow, Neukölln, to students seeking housing who are enrolled at a university or university of applied sciences in Berlin and are within the standard period of study for their respective bachelor’s or master’s degree program.
Accommodation in shared apartments for two people
- Well-furnished two-bedroom apartment (60 sq. m.)
- Comfortable & fully furnished living/work/bedroom (approx. 20 m²) 2)
- Modern kitchen with appliances, dishes, pots, and pans, etc.
- Clean bathroom with shower and toilet
- Internet and a washing machine are included in all shared apartments
- No additional fees




An Overview of Social Engagement
Duration of the assignment: 4 hours per week or 18 hours per month
Possible applications:
- Support for a local social/nonprofit organization (e.g., Berliner Tafel, Berliner Stadtmission, Caritas Berlin, Hejmo, Die Arche, etc.)
- Assistance from SBW Berlin, if necessary
Social Responsibility
Since SBW Berlin offers free accommodation only in exchange for community service, all volunteers engage in community service in Berlin during their time with the project. For example, volunteers can support a social or nonprofit organization in Berlin by helping to serve meals or sort clothes in the clothing bank, if such services are available for homeless people. There are also various opportunities for working with children and young people—from helping to organize recreational activities to providing homework assistance, and so on. The important thing is that All volunteers are socially engaged in some way and are proactive.
Requirements for participating in “Flats4Volunteers”
- Between the ages of 18 and 30
- Enrolled at a university or university of applied sciences in Berlin
- Completion of the respective bachelor’s or master’s degree program within the standard period of study

- Current Certificate of Enrollment
- Cover letter regarding (planned) community service
- If applicable, a copy of your admission to a university or university of applied sciences in Berlin
