Rising demand for housing and the associated housing shortage in Germany: In recent years, the demand for housing and therefore the housing shortage in many German cities has steadily increased or grown. Berlin, for example, has over 3.8 million inhabitants (as of 2024). Berliner Stadtmission states on its website that there are an estimated 40,000 homeless people in Berlin – a quarter of whom are women. “Homeless,” continues Berlin Stadtmission, ”is anyone who does not own a home or does not have a secure tenancy agreement.” Anyone can become homeless these days.

Reasons for homelessness

Besides mental illness or addiction, other possible reasons for subsequent homelessness include relationship changes (e.g. the end of a relationship, the loss of a partner, etc.) or the termination of an apartment due to personal needs. Those who then lose hope and motivation to find or look for a new home are also at risk of slipping into “street homelessness.”

Characteristics of homeless people

Some homeless people can often find temporary accommodation with relatives or friends or live in boarding houses that they pay for themselves.

Despite not having a permanent home, they people are generally well integrated socially and have stable employment.

The project

In fall 2024, a social project based on the Housing First principle was created in collaboration with the Neukölln district office: VierWändeFinden. In the context of this project, SBW Berlin offers homeless people secure and free accommodation for an initial period of six months. It also provides them with advice on finding accommodation and other administrative procedures (e.g. applying for a housing entitlement certificate).

Support in the following areas

  • Housing registration
  • Public Broadcasting Contribution service
  • Housing entitlement certificate
  • Preparation of documents required for the apartment search (CV, letter of introduction, etc.)
  • Overview of various housing portals and state-owned housing associations in Berlin
  • Creation of profiles on housing portals
  • Accompanying guests to viewing appointments etc.

How can I take part in the “VierWändeFinden” project?

Participants (hereinafter referred to as guests) are first selected by the Neukölln district office and then by SBW Berlin gGmbH Eligibility criteria include the absence of drug addiction or other serious health problems or similar. Once accepted into the project, guests receive a subletting contract for free accommodation in the SBW Berlin premises. As a rule, they are provided with a furnished room in a shared flat for two people free of charge. In addition to the advice provided by SBW Berlin, guests are expected to proactively participate in the search for accommodation and prepare the documents required for the search independently. The aim is for guests to find their own permanent accommodation within six months.
